HOUSTON, Texas — Despite battling a hostile environment throughout the evening, the Nicholls State University women’s volleyball program (8-7, 2-2 Southland) put together a tenacious effort in Thursday night’s road contest against HBU (9-9. 1-2 Southland), outpacing the Huskies by a 3-1 set margin at Sharp Gym in Houston, Texas.
KEY STORYLINES & STATISTICS (W 3-1)
— After the Red & Gray jumped out to a quick lead behind a 25-20 first set win, the match progressed into a near-brawl for the remaining three as each set boiled down to just a two-point margin of victory (25-23; 23-25; 25-23).
— The Colonels posted a strong offensive showing throughout, finishing with a .241 hitting percentage and 69 total kills as a team. Overall, the .241 hitting percentage ranks fourth amongst all contests this season and first within Nicholls’ three league competitions.
— Individually, sophomores OH Emily Gauthreaux & RS Katie Jones paced the squad behind their double-digit kill performances — 26 combined — while junior S Meghan Wozniak managed a heavy majority of the team’s assists, posting 40 on the night. Gauthreaux, who led the squad with 16 kills, wrapped up the match with an impressive .280 hitting percentage, a season-best for the sophomore if you exclude her limited showing against Alcorn State (.350 hitting percentage; eight kills on 20 total attempts).
— Defensively, junior OH Kate Hoerdemann continues to garner more of the team’s digging responsibilities, once again pacing the squad with 20 on the night.
With the one-game roadtrip to Houston Baptist successfully wrapped up, the Red & Gray return home for back-to-back Southland matches next week, hosting Abilene Christian on Thursday, Oct. 10 and UIW on Saturday, Oct. 12 at Stopher Gym in Thibodaux, La.
