Defense attorney pleads guilty to tax evasion charge

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A Louisiana criminal defense attorney has pleaded guilty to a tax evasion charge.

The Justice Department says 66-year-old Michael Thiel, of Baton Rouge, pleaded guilty Wednesday to one count of evading the payment of federal income and employment taxes for 2003 through 2013.

Prosecutors say Thiel agrees that he owed federal income tax, penalties and interest totaling nearly $737,000 and employment tax, penalties and interest totaling nearly $262,000.

Thiel, whose law practice is based in Hammond, faces a maximum sentence of 37 months in prison. His sentencing in New Orleans is set for March 22.
