High School football district play starts in the Shreveport/Bossier area. There were two games in the area last night. Mansfield rolled over Green Oaks 42-20 and Woodlawn opened their defense of their 2016 1-4A Title with a resounding 43-8 win over Woodlawn at Independence Stadium.
Tonight, Evangel travels to Parkway in Bossier in what was billed as the game of the year in the area as little as 3 weeks ago. Since then literally everything possible that could go wrong for Parkway has happened. Both superstar QB Justin Rogers and WR Terrace Marshall Jr. are out for the season already. The Panthers have limped to a 1-2 start and were blown out by Pulaski (Ark) 62-21 last week. Evangel is a massive favorite to win this district with 4 starters on defense already committed to Power 5 programs. The Eagles will be well rested after their highly anticipated game vs. Trinity Christian was cancelled last Friday. Evangel outscored their opponents by a whopping 330-20 last season in district play. Their defense of their title starts tonight at 7pm in Bossier and they should roll.
Airline takes on winless Southwood at Independence Stadium at 7 p.m. in their district opener. The Southwood Cowboys have not won a game in district 1-5A in years and are winless in 2017. Airline is 2-1 on the season after falling 36-18 in Ruston last week. The Vikings should have a nice bounce back win to start district play tonight at the Indy Bowl.
Byrd travels to Haughton for their district opener. The Yellow Jackets fell to 2-1 on the season with a 22-9 loss at Sulphur last week. Byrd had multiple turnovers inside the Sulphur 10 yard line and gave away a chance to win the game. The Haughton Buccaneers are 2-1 this year including a big win 0ver their rival in Minden in week 1 42-7. The 3-0 Captain Shreve Gators have a non district game hosting Westgate.
In District 1-4A, the 3-0 and red hot Benton Tigers open with Bossier tonight. Benton is the favorite in this district with a high flying offense led by QB Garret Hable and WR Doyle Adams. North Desoto is also off to a 3-0 start and travels to Northwood. The Griffins are coming off a big home win over Many 21-12 last week. Finally, Huntington travels to the newly renovated pit to play 2-1 Minden. The Crimson Tide defeated Haynesville and North Webster the last 2 weeks in non-district matchups.
Loyola hosts the defending 2A State Champion Sterlington Panthers. This will be a massive home test for the Flyers as Sterlington looks to have a great team again this year after shutting out OCS 2 weeks ago.
The 0-3 Calvary Cavs host Peabody tonight and should get their 1st win of the season.
