District play started last week in the Shreveport/Bossier City area for high school football. Unfortunately, the games were mostly blowouts and not competitive at all.
In District 1-5A play, Evangel shut Parkway out 52-0 in Bossier. Everything continues to go wrong for Parkway this fall and the Panthers will struggle to make the playoffs. Evangel proved once again why they are the dominant high school football program in this area. The Eagles were led by Defensive Back Ar’Darius Washington who had an 85 yard punt return touchdown as well as a rushing touchdown in this game. Evangel hosts Haughton this Friday in Shreveport.
The Haughton Buccaneers made a huge statement by blowing Byrd out 44-19 in the piney woods. Haughton Running Back Lavonta Gipson had a monster game with 174 yards rushing and 4 TDs in the win. He also is a star linebacker on defense. This is the first win for Haughton over Byrd in quite awhile. Byrd falls to 2-2 on the season with a second consecutive loss. Coach Mike Suggs is going to have to figure out the defensive woes in a hurry. Byrd takes on Captain Shreve Thursday night at 7pm at Lee Hedges Stadium in a big 1-5A rivalry game.
Airline hammered Southwood 49-6 at Independence Stadium. The Vikings are now 3-1 on the season and 1-0 in District 1-5A. Airline hosts 1-3 Parkway in Bossier in their rivalry game Friday night at 7pm. That game will be broadcast live on 100.7 FM/1340 AM The Ticket.
In District 1-4A, Benton hammered Bossier 49-6 in Benton. The Tigers continue to dominate so far this fall and are now 4-0. They are the early favorite in this district. Led by QB Garret Hable, RB Jermaine Newton and WR Doyle Adams, this offense has scored over 40 points in all 4 victories. On Thursday, Woodlawn beat BTW 43-8 to open their defense of the district title. Woodlawn Running Back Trivenskey Mosley led the Knights with 215 yards rushing and 3 Touchdowns. Mosley is one of the top players in Shreveport this fall.
In a mild upset, Northwood blew North Desoto out 63-27. Northwood has a high powered offense led by sophomore QB Payton Bogan. North Desoto takes on Woodlawn Friday night and Northwood travels to Benton in what should be a shootout. Minden beat Huntington 21-14 in their first home game at the freshly renovated Pit. Minden takes on BTW this Friday.
In other action in the area, Calvary won their 1st game of the season with a 35-12 blowout of Peabody. This was Rodney Guin’s 1st victory at Calvary. The defending 1A state champion Sterlington smashed Loyola 43-13 in Shreveport. Sterlington will be back in Shreveport Friday to play Calvary and Loyola plays at North Caddo.
Haynesville bounced back from their rare 2 game losing streak with a 36-6 win at Jonesboro Hodge. Defending 1A state champion Logansport continued their path of destruction with a 51-7 win over Northwood-Lena. Logansport is led by QB Dalton Shaw and TCU commit WR John Stephens Jr. Many people think they have a great shot to repeat as 1A state champion this season.
