  • Staff Reporter

BEAUMONT, Texas — The Nicholls State University women’s soccer program (3-4-1, 0-1-0 Southland) dropped the team’s Southland Conference opener at Lamar (4-5-0, 1-0-0 Southland) on Saturday evening, faltering to the Cardinals by a 6-0 margin at the LU Soccer Complex in Beaumont, Texas.

The Cardinals secured control of the match early after bolting out to a 5-0 edge in the first half, closing the match with 27 total shots — 18 on goal — and four corner kicks. Meanwhile, the Red & Gray challenged the Lamar defense with 12 total shots — three on goal — and one corner kick of their own. Offensively, seniors Blaire Laiche & Tessa Calabria along with freshman Alicia Carlos led the way with two shots apiece while the three total shots-on-goal were evenly split between sophomore Regan Duffourc and seniors Kristy Helmers & Jeanne Harson. Senior Roosa Hurmerinta and redshirt junior Jade Gallaher shared equal time between the posts, surrendering a combined six goals while grabbing 12 total saves.

With the Southland opener out of the way, the Colonels turn their attention to their league home kickoff against Abilene Christian, facing off with the Wildcats on Friday, Sept. 27 at 4 p.m. at the Nicholls Soccer Complex.
