BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Nicholls State University men’s golfer Nils Dobrunz earned his first career top 5 finish as the freshman shot a 3-under in the final day of the Graeme McDowell Invitational Tuesday to tie for second place out of 100 golfers.
Dobrunz finished the event at -6 with a three-round score of 210, improving each round by one stroke (71-70-69). He tied with three other golfers as Western Kentucky’s Linus Lo earned medalist honors at 9-under.
“This was a great performance by Nils against quality competition,” said Nicholls head golf coach James Schilling.
Dobrunz started on the back nine and shot 3-under with three birdies and no bogeys. After the turn, he bogeyed three times but followed each one with a birdie for an even 36. Dobrunz led the entire tournament with a collective 8-under on par 5s. He carded birdies on four of the five par 5s in the final round.
Playing shorthanded, Nicholls finished in last with a team score of 915. The Colonels repeated their first-round score on Tuesday (304-307-304). North Florida edged host UAB by a single stroke for the team victory (850).
Warut Wongrungroj totaled a 5-over 77 for the second straight round and tied for 69th at 230. Ryan O’Neil and Ben Baker both carded 79s on the final 18, ending with a 239 and 240, respectively. Mickael Najmark withdrew from the tournament with an injury.
