NEW ORLEANS – Tulane University Athletics announced today the establishment of the Stephen Martin Scholars as part of a long-term initiative to honor the lasting impact that individuals from diverse backgrounds have made at the University.

“We want Tulane to be an institution reflective of the world we live in and one in which all members of our community feel equally welcomed, supported and at home,” Tulane University President Michael A. Fitts said.

The Stephen Martin Scholars will honor Stephen Martin, who broke the color barrier in the Southeastern Conference when he played his first baseball contest for Tulane in 1965.

“We are proud to honor the legacy of Stephen Martin,” Tulane Director of Athletics Troy Dannen said. “Mr. Martin’s remarkable determination as a student-athlete remains one of the most significant moments in our University’s history. Mr. Martin played a pivotal role in advancing collegiate athletics when he stepped on that SEC baseball field in 1965, and this program will ensure we never forget how meaningful that role was.”

The Stephen Martin Scholars will recognize two Green Wave student-athletes annually as recipients of the award. This year’s recipients will be announced during the Tulane-Connecticut football game this Saturday.

Prospective candidates for the honor will represent the highest level of character and leadership skills while being academically driven and civic-minded.

Martin and his wife, Brigid Cheri Martin, also a Tulane graduate, were married for 43 years and the couple had three children, Stephen Jr., Nicole and Dana. Stephen Jr. and Dana each earned their college degrees from Tulane.

Born Nov. 2, 1946, Martin was a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, earning his bachelor’s degree in Latin from Tulane in 1968 and earned his master’s in business administration from Tulane in 1973.

He served his country in the United States Army and retired as the Chief Financial Officer for Tuskegee University in 2012.
