MONROE, La. – The ULM Warhawks are set for two matchups this weekend against conference foes. The Warhawks will take on Coastal Carolina at 6 p.m. on Friday before battling Appalachian State at noon on Sunday. Both games will take place at Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
“Anytime you can play tough competition, it makes you better,” head coach Charlie Olson said. “It shows us some of our weaknesses and allows us to grow and get better.”
ULM (9-8, 0-2 Sun Belt) will be led by Mikaela Worley and Kate Blasingame. Worley is averaging 3.45 kills per set while Blasingame is averaging 2.88 kills per set.
Setters McKinley Thiede and Darby Fisher have a combined 573 assists on the season. Thiede is averaging 5.40 assists per set while Fisher is averaging 4.41 assists per set.
“Having a two-setter offense allows us to have more firepower at the line,” Olson said.
Blasingame leads a squad that has 93 service aces with 18. Albany Schaffer leads the team in digs, averaging 3.40 digs per set. Alix Christie and Ina Gosen have a combined 67 blocks.
First up for the Warhawks is Coastal Carolina on Friday. The Chanticleers (12-2, 2-0 Sun Belt) are coming off of a sweep of Georgia Southern and a 3-1 win over Georgia State.
“Coastal is the best team I’ve seen on film that we’ve had to face this year,” Olson said.
Coastal Carolina is led by Anett Nemath, who is averaging 3.89 kills per set and has 39 blocks. Nemath will be joined by Brigitta Petrenko, who is averaging 10.24 assists per set and has 31 service aces.
“They have a right side that’s arguably one of the best right sides in the country,” Olson said.
Other key players for the Chanticleers include Lina Perugini and Christina Nance. Perugini is averaging 3.75 digs per set and Nance leads the team with 46 blocks.
After facing off with Coastal Carolina, ULM will take on Appalachian State Sunday. The Mountaineers (6-9, 2-0 Sun Belt) are coming off of 3-1 wins over both Georgia State and Georgia Southern.
“Defensively, they’re very good and they’re also a very strong serving team,” Olson said.
Emma Longley leads Appalachian State with 224 kills for an average of four kills per set. Longley will be joined by Emma Reilly, who has 32 service aces and is averaging 5.20 digs per set.
Sam Bickley is the leading setter for the Mountaineers with an average of 10.39 assists per set. Kara Spicer leads the team with 44 blocks.
“Our job is to keep the ball in system, play our game and spread the ball around to a majority of our attackers,” Olson said. “It’s time to defend the nest.”
