MONROE, La. – The ULM cross country team returns to the course after a three-week hiatus at 9 a.m. Saturday to take part in the University of Arkansas Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville. The race is set to begin at 9 a.m.
This weekend’s race marks the third of the season for the Warhawk men’s unit, which has garnered two Top-3 outings in races at both Mississippi College (third) and Louisiana Tech (second). The women, who also took part in the same events, crossed the line fourth in each race.
Through the first two races the Warhawk men’s unit has been led by Kiprotich Mitei, who opened the season with a second-place finish at the Mississippi College Season Opener after crossing the line in a time of 16:29.6. He followed that up with a fourth-place outing in the Mook 4 Invite, which took place at Louisiana Tech, after posting a time of 21:13.8.
Along with Mitei, ULM has received Top-10 outings from Eric Hawkins, who earned seventh at Mississippi College (17:21.9), and Gregor Findlay, who came through with a seventh-place finish at Louisiana Tech (21:20.9).
As for the ULM women, the combination of Edith Jebet, Angela Jepchirchir, Benadine Chelimo and Kaye-Loni Bowden have been among the Top-15 finishers in the first two events. Jebet, the only Warhawk with two Top-10 outings for the women, opened the season with a sixth-place outing at the Mississippi College Season Opener (16:28.4) on Aug. 30. Two weeks later, she crossed the line second at the Mook 4 Invite in a time of 15:25.5.
Jepchirchir, who earned seventh place at Mississippi College (16:37.2), was 12th in her most recent outing at Louisiana Tech, after posting a time of 16:57.9. Chelimo, who ran unattached in her first collegiate race, was the individual champion of the Mook 4 Invite with a time of 14:18.5 Bowden’s first two races of her Warhawk career resulted in a 15th-place outing at Mississippi College (17:37.5) before closing out the Mook 4 Invite in 10th with a time of 16:31.7.
