Unprecedented Injury Bug Continues to Marr Week 2

  • Ben Mintz

Once again, another week of the 2017 high school football season has been marred by season ending injuries to top recruits in the area. In week 1, it was Parkway’s superstar QB Justin Rogers going down with a dislocated knee against BTW. In week 2, Parkway’s all world WR Terrace Marshall Jr. was carted off the field late in the first half at Independence Stadium with a serious ankle injury in Parkway’s 50-27 loss to Pearl (Miss) in the 2017 Battle on the Border.  The Parkway Panthers entered the 2017 season as a top 10 team in 5A, now they will have to work hard to just make the playoffs after losing both halves of the top QB and WR combo in the nation.  The Panthers are 1-1 on the season and play at Pulaski (Ark) Friday night.

LSU commit and Evangel star defensive tackle Davin Cotton has also been ruled out for the year with a leg injury.  The Eagles fell 28-7 at the #4 ranked team in country, Allen (TX), on Friday night. Evangel’s defense gave a great effort but got no help from the young offense and ultimately were out on the field the whole game. Evangel’s only score came on a 100 yard kick return by LSU commit Ardarius Washington.  Evangel’s anticipated home matchup against Trinity Christian from Dallas Friday has been cancelled for undisclosed reasons. This is a definite bummer for the area as there was a lot of excitement about seeing Deion Sanders’ son at QB and Deion as offensive co-ordinator in Shreveport Friday night. Evangel will only play 8 games in the regular season.

Here are the results from the 2017 Landers Dodge Battle on the Border:

West Monroe 30 BTW (Tulsa) 21

Pearl (Miss) 50 Parkway 27

Brentwood (Tenn) 21 Bishop Dunne (TX) 14

Grayson (Ga) 22 John Curtis 9

Byrd 28 Moss Point (Miss) 19

Once again, I want to thank Landers Dodge and all the people responsible for this event as it was a success yet again. Shreveport is lucky to have one of the top high school football showcases in the nation and hopefully this will continue for years to come.

In other action in the area, Airline defeated Bastrop 27-26 on the road in a wild game Friday night to move to 2-0 this season. The Vikings were able to run the last 5 minutes of the clock out on their final drive to seal the victory in a hostile road environment. Airline travels to Ruston Friday night for a big non-district matchup.  That game will be live on The Ticket 100.7 FM/1340 AM with myself on the call. Airline coach Bo Meeks was a star QB at Ruston in high school so this game always has special meaning to him.

Calvary fell at Union 32-25 to start the season 0-2. Benton continued their hot start destroying Alexandria 63-25 on the road. The Tigers will be a force in 4A this year as long as they can dodge this injury bug that’s going around. Loyola defeated West Ouachita 20-14 to get to 1-1 on the year. The Flyers are throwing the football a lot more than usual so far this season. North Desoto won 35-7 at North Webster. Haughton defeated BTW 42-6 and Minden won at Haynesville 21-20 in other local matchups.
