BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Andoni Etchenique is locked in a six-way tie for 11th and owns the lowest score on the ULM men’s golf team that sits eighth in the team standings after two rounds of play at the Graeme McDowell Invitational, hosted by UAB at the Greystone Golf & Country Club.
Etchenique, who has a 2-under-par score of 142 (69-73), wrapped up the first round of play on Monday with five birdies and 10 pars. He followed that by carding two birdies and 13 pars in the second round, sitting four shots off the pace established by the duo of Ben Reichert (UAB) and Linus Lo (Western Kentucky), who top the individual leaderboard. Both Reichert and Lo own a 6-under-par score of 138.
ULM (293-297—590) is eighth place as a team, 26 shots off the pace established by North Florida, which ended the day 12-under-par with a score of 564. The Warhawks, who are 14-over-par, are one stroke behind Chattanooga and Southern Miss, who are 13-over-par and locked in a tie for sixth.
“We played some nice golf in stretches but ultimately big numbers due mostly to errant tee shots cost us,” said ULM head coach Tim Baldwin. “We need to play well tomorrow and salvage the week. Our guys are positive we just need to get some momentum going in the right direction. Andoni played solid today leading the way.”
Guillaume Fanonnel, responsible for the second-lowest score on the ULM unit, has a 2-over-par score of 146 (73-73) heading into the third round on Tuesday. Fanonnel capped off the first round with three birdies and 11 pars, recording two birdies on the back nine. His second round included two birdies, which came on the second and ninth greens, along with 14 pars.
Warhawk freshman J.C. Van Buynder is in a three-way tie for 45th after finishing the course 6-over-par with a 150 (72-78). His opening round included 14 pars and two birdies, which came on the second and 18th greens. Van Buynder managed 11 pars and a birdie during the second round, posting his lone birdie on the 13th green.
Keegan McLachlan heads into the third round with a 13-over-par score of 157 (84-73), locked in a four-tie for 83rd. While he didn’t record a birdie in the first round, McLachlan emerged with 10 pars. McLachlan shaved 11 strokes off his first-round score in the second, climbing 13 spots on the leaderboard in the process, by virtue of four birdies and nine pars.
Joao Girao, tied for 87th through the first two rounds of action, is 14-over-par with a score of 158 (79-79). He ended the first round of play with three birdies, two of which came in the first nine holes, along with eight pars. Girao ended his second round by carding a 79, posting one birdie and 11 pars. His birdie came on the 14th green.
