The halfway point of the 2017 high school football season was officially reached over the weekend. Week 5 was highlighted in the Shreveport/Bossier City area by two big rivalry games as well as a shootout in Benton.
Thursday night, Byrd hammered Captain Shreve 34-17 in the 40th edition of the Backyard Brawl at Lee Hedges Stadium in Shreveport. Coach Mike Suggs and the Yellow Jackets were dominant in this game leading by as much as 31-3 at one point. Byrd was led by Dakota Byrd who had an outstanding effort on defense. This was a strong bounce back effort by Byrd coming off of a 2 game losing streak including a 44-19 loss at Haughton to open District 1-5A play. Byrd is now 3-2 on the season and 1-1 in district play. Byrd’s next opponent is Southwood on Friday night at 7pm. Captain Shreve has lost the momentum of a 3-0 start with back to back losses and is now 0-1 in district. They travel to Parkway this Friday night.
I had the pleasure of calling a wild and crazy rivalry game between Airline and Parkway at MD Ray Field in Bossier City Friday night. Parkway prevailed 42-25 in an absolute thriller. Parkway jumped out to a 21-0 in the 2nd quarter due to some Airline mistakes. The Vikings had lots of penalties and a key turnover early in this game. Airline cut the lead to 21-7 at half. The Vikings came out blazing in the 2nd half storming back to a 35-34 lead in the middle of the 4th quarter. Parkway sophomore QB Ar’mani Larry threw a laser up the sideline for a 52 yard pass on 4th and 9 from the Parkway 41 with a couple minutes left in the play of the game. Parkway then scored and successfully converted a 2 point conversion to lead 42-35. Airline drove the field and made it to the Parkway red zone. Airline Junior Quarterback Brad Fream was sacked on the final play of the game at the Parkway 20 for the Panthers to prevail in this thriller. Parkway was led by Running Back Eric Williams who had 110 yards rushing and 4 touchdowns. This was a much needed win for Parkway who is now 2-3 on the season and 1-1 in district. Airline falls to 3-2 and 1-1 in district play. The schedule gets no easier for Airline as they host Evangel Friday night at 7pm in Bossier on 100.7 FM/1340 AM The Ticket.
In other district 1-5A action, Evangel defeated Haughton 31-3 in Shreveport. Evangel continues to steamroll through this district with their dominating defense. The Eagles were led by fullback Elijah Chatman who had 2 touchdowns rushing and also played well at linebacker on defense. Haughton hosts Franklin Parish in a non-district game Friday night at 7pm.
In District 1-4A play, Benton defeated Northwood in a shootout 50-42 in Benton. The Tigers are now 5-0 and are ranked 3rd in the state in 4A. Senior Quarterback Garrett Hable had 247 yards passing, 128 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns in the win for Benton. Sophomore QB Peyton Bogan continued his outstanding season in defeat. Northwood was picked to finish last in district 1-4A and continues to impress. Benton plays at the Pit in Minden on Friday and Northwood takes on Woodlawn in what should be another wild high scoring affair.
Woodlawn crushed North Desoto 50-7 in other district 1-4A action. Woodlawn Running Back Trivenskey Mosley had 200 yards rushing and 5 touchdowns in the victory. Huntington defeated Bossier 31-23 and Minden won at BTW 27-24 in other district action.
Sterlington defeated Calvary 38-20 in Shreveport. Calvary falls to 1-4 on the season with the loss against the 2A defending state champion Panthers. Loyola won at North Caddo 36-19. Calvary plays at Loyola at Messmer Stadium on Friday night at 7pm.
In 1A play, Logansport continued to roll with a 49-8 win at Montgomery and Haynesville crushed Arcadia 47-8. I will have a week 6 preview up on Thursday.
