Week 6 is the beginning of the 2nd half of the 2017 high school football season. There were a couple of games in the area last night. Byrd hammered Southwood 43-13 at Lee Hedges Stadium in a District 1-5A matchup. The Yellow Jackets have now won back to back games in district play and have gained some momentum for the stretch run. Haynesville overcame a slow start to defeat Green Oaks 22-16. The Golden Tor had an up and down first half of the season but should contend deep in the 1A playoffs as usual.
In District 1-5A, Airline hosts Evangel in Military Appreciation Night at MD Ray Field in Bossier. The Vikings are coming off a heartbreaking 42-35 loss to Parkway in a rivalry game last week. The schedule certainly gets no easier for Airline tonight hosting the defending Division 1 and District 1-5A Champion Evangel Eagles. Evangel is coming off a 31-3 win over Haughton and has one of the top defenses in Louisiana this year. They are dealing with injuries to stars Defensive Tackle Davin Cotton and Safety Ar’Darius Washington. Evangel is led on offense by Running Back Tamaudge Sloan. The Eagles offense is still young and has struggled some this season. This game will be live on 100.7 FM The Ticket at 7pm tonight.
Captain Shreve travels to Parkway in another 1-5A matchup tonight. Parkway is on an emotional high after their 42-35 win at Airline last week led by Running Back Eric Williams 110 yards rushing and 4 Touchdowns. Offensive Co-Oridnator Ragan Smith did a great job last week adjusting the Panthers offense to a spread running game after losing superstars QB Justin Rogers and WR Terrace Marshall Jr. the 1st two weeks of the season. Captain Shreve has lost two games in a row after a hot 3-0 start and is looking to right the ship. Gators QB Lucas Grubb is playing with a knee injury that continues to bother him.
The highlight of the District 1-4A slate this week is a Northwood/Woodlawn potential shootout. Northwood pushed the #3 Benton Tigers to the brink in a 50-42 loss in Benton last Friday. Northwood Sophomore QB Luke Bogan continues to shine. Woodlawn is led by star Running Back Triviskey Mosley who had 200 yards rushing and 5 Touchdowns in the Knights 50-7 win over North Desoto last week. The winner of this game certainly can claim to be a top 2 team in this deep district. Benton travels to the renovated Pit to play Minden tonight. Minden has a good defense but will be tested by the high powered Tigers offense led by QB Garret Hable, RB Jermaine Newton and WR Doyle Adams Jr. Can Minden’s offense score enough to keep up with the Tigers? The other 1-4A matchups are BTW at Huntington and Bossier at North Desoto.
Calvary travels to Messmer Stadium to play Loyola in a battle of Shreveport private schools. Calvary’s high powered offense will be tested by a quality Loyola defense. Calvary has a good team despite its 1-4 record led by QB Cade Hart, all world RB Kordavian Washington and WR Tank Davis. Despite losing a ton off the 2016 team, Loyola is 3-2 and playing well. This should be a fun matchup.
