- Ben Mintz
My name is Ben Mintz. Some of you may already know me (I hope) as the voice of Mixin’ It Up with Mintz on The Ticket 100.7 FM/130 AM every weekday from 3-6pm. I also am the voice of Airline Viking High School Football in Bossier City. I am honored and humbled that my lifelong friend Will Broyles has asked me to start writing local sports content for this wonderful site. I will be posting 5 articles a week for the rest of 2017 covering local sports in the Shreveport/Bossier City area.
I moved to Shreveport back in December of 2015 and I absolutely love being apart of this great community. I took the long and winding road to graduate from Ole Miss in 2015 at the ripe age of 32 with a managerial finance degree and here I am covering sports. I was a professional poker player from 2006-2014 and am often found playing poker at the Horseshoe Poker Room in Bossier City still. I had a lot of success in the online and live poker world and plan to write some about the local poker scene on here. The peak of my career was finishing 75th place in the 2011 WSOP Main Event out of 7,000 players in Lass Vegas. I lived in New Orleans from 2009 to 2014 and had the time of my life down there during the height of my poker career before going back to Ole Miss to finish my degree.
I was attending my buddy’s grandfather’s funeral in Monroe in October of 2015 when my friend Sean Fox (ESPN Monroe/Ruston Sports Director) brought up the idea of me moving to Shreveport/Bossier City to host a sports radio show. I have always been a passionate, energetic sports fan and jumped at the chance despite my lack of experience. The radio show started December 14th, 2015 and is still going strong to this day. Now it is time to branch out into writing about the talent in this area.
There’s a strong sports scene here that deserves recognition. Shreveport has one of the top junior golf scenes in the United States. Sam Burns, Nathan Jeansome and Philip Barbaree Jr. are currently 3 of the final 64 golfers in the United States Amateur Championship in Los Angeles. This area has both an exciting young hockey team (Mudbugs) and two minor league soccer teams in the Rafters and Lady Rafters. Shreveport/Bossier also has one of the best high school football scenes in the South headlined by Evangel, Calvary, Parkway, Byrd, Airline and Loyola. I will be covering all of these teams in depth on this website all fall.
Next week I will start the high school football previews on here. I will cover all of these schools complete with interviews from each head coach. High school football jamborees are next Friday August 25th and the season starts on September 1st! I am ecstatic that my favorite time of year is right around the corner. Tomorrow I will be writing about the Independence Bowl Kickoff Luncheon I attended last week. Friday I will be at Freedom Fields to cover Louisiana Tech’s practice in Bossier. I look forward to bringing local sports commentary to Real Shreveport and thanks for supporting this community.
